In a time when environmental consciousness and the ever-increasing cost of gasoline take center stage, hybrid vehicles like the Toyota Avalon Hybrid have become the preferred choice for discerning car buyers. Yet, a common question lingering in the minds of potential hybrid car owners is, “How long does the Avalon Hybrid battery last?” In this article, we’ll delve into the intricacies of Avalon Hybrid batteries to provide you with a comprehensive answer.

Hybrid Car Batteries: An Overview

Before we explore the lifespan of an Avalon Hybrid battery, it’s crucial to comprehend the essential components of hybrid vehicles. Hybrid cars, such as the Avalon, employ two power sources: a gasoline engine and an electric motor fueled by a high-voltage battery pack. This battery pack is responsible for storing and supplying electric power to the vehicle, thereby enhancing its fuel efficiency.

In the realm of hybrid vehicles, batteries typically fall into one of two categories: nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) or lithium-ion (Li-ion). Each type carries its own set of advantages and drawbacks, but the primary consideration lies in their energy storage capacity. NiMH batteries, renowned for being cost-effective and having a longer lifespan, outshine Li-ion batteries in this regard.

Avalon Hybrid Battery Life

The average life of a Toyota Avalon hybrid battery is approximately 3-5 years or around 80,000 miles.

The longevity of an Avalon Hybrid battery is a topic of great interest for prospective buyers. On average, an Avalon Hybrid battery is designed to endure approximately 80,000 miles. This lifespan can be influenced by several factors, including driving habits, maintenance, and environmental conditions. For most drivers, this translates to almost a decade of battery life.

The brakes are used to stop the car by converting the kinetic energy of the car into heat, which is then dissipated.

In a hybrid car, the electric motor (or sometimes also the fuel motor and transmission) is used to power the wheels and propel the car forward. The regenerative braking system captures the kinetic energy of the car and converts it into electrical energy, which is then used to charge the battery.

When you step on the brake pedal, the regenerative braking system engages and helps slow down the car. As the car slows down, the wheels turn a small generator. This generator produces electricity, which is stored in a battery.

The main benefit of regenerative brakes is that they help improve fuel efficiency. By generating electricity while you brake, they reduce the amount of work your car’s engine has to do. This means your car doesn’t have to use as much fuel.

What Does Regenerative Braking Feel Like When You’re Driving?

If you’re driving a hybrid or electric car with regenerative brakes, you may notice that the brake pedal feels different than in a traditional car.

The regenerative braking system engages when you step on the brake pedal, so you may feel a slight resistance as the system starts to slow down the car.

You may also notice that the brake pedal feels firmer than usual. This is because the regenerative braking system works to slow down the car and generate electricity.

What Hybrid Vehicles Have a Regenerative Braking System?

BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle)

A BEV is powered only by electricity and has no combustion engine. Examples of BEVs include the Tesla Model S, the Nissan Leaf, and the BMW i3.

The batteries are usually larger than those in HEVs and PHEVs, as they are the sole source of power for the vehicle.

BEV vehicles contain no emissions and are therefore the most environmentally friendly type of electric vehicle. They are also usually the quietest, as there is no engine noise.

The main downside of BEVs is that they have a shorter range than HEVs and PHEVs, as the batteries are not assisted by a gasoline-powered combustion engine. This means that you will need to recharge your BEV more often, which can be inconvenient if you are driving long distances.

Additionally, BEVs can take longer to charge than HEVs and PHEVs, since the battery is larger.

HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle)

An HEV is powered by both a combustion engine and an electric battery. The battery is smaller and is only used to power the electric motor. Examples of HEVs include the Toyota Prius and the Honda Insight.

The advantage of an HEV over a BEV is that the range is much longer, as the battery is assisted by the combustion engine. The hybrid vehicle’s battery is not charged by plugging it into an outlet, but rather by recapturing energy that would otherwise be lost during braking and deceleration.

This means that HEVs are more convenient for long-distance driving, as you will never need to stop for a recharge.

While hybrid vehicles are not as environmentally friendly as BEVs, since they still contain emissions from the combustion engine, they are usually more affordable than their all-electric counterparts.

PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle)

A PHEV is similar to an HEV in that it contains both a battery and a combustion engine. However, the battery in a PHEV is larger than an HEV battery and can be plugged into an electrical outlet to recharge. Examples of PHEVs include the Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid and the Honda Clarity.

The advantage of a PHEV over an HEV is that it has a much longer electric range when the battery is fully charged, as the combustion engine assists the electric motor.

Additionally, PHEVs emit fewer emissions than HEVs, since the battery can power the vehicle on its own for shorter trips.

PHEVs can be more expensive than HEVs, but generally less expensive than BEVs.

BEV vs HEV vs PHEV: Which Should I Choose?

In this article, we will discuss the items that you should include in your roadside emergency kit!

Items To Include In Your Roadside Emergency Car Kit

While this list could go on and on, we’ll start with our top 17 items to include that can help you keep safe in the event of an emergency.

Blanket

Even if you don’t live in a colder area or it’s a warm season, you never know when this can come in handy. If you can’t start your hybrid car, your vehicle can get very cold, and if you are stranded overnight, temperatures can drop faster than you realize.

Blankets can also come in handy for more than just keeping warm. If you are stuck for a while, a blanket can also be used for privacy if you need to change clothes, as a windshield visor during hot, sunny days, or even as a make-shift bed.

Spare Tire

This one goes without saying, but you should always have a spare tire in your car. If you get a flat, you’ll be glad you have this! Always be sure to check it periodically, as spare tires that sit unused can sometimes get deflated, which will defeat their purpose in an emergency situation.

Extra Clothing

Again, even if you don’t think you’ll need it, extra clothing is always a good idea. If you are stranded or have to walk for help, you’ll be thankful to have an extra set of clothes. Be sure to include items like a jacket, gloves, hat, and sturdy shoes.

Tire Changing Kit

In order to change your tire, you’re going to need certain tools. A tire changing kit will include a tire iron and a jack, so you can get the job done.

Flashlight

A flashlight is an essential item for any roadside emergency kit. If you have to change a tire at night, a flashlight will be a lifesaver. A portable power bank can also come in handy, as it will give you a boost of power when you need it most.

Keep one charged up and ready to go in your emergency kit and check it periodically to be sure it doesn’t need a charge fill.

Sand

If you live in a snowy area (or even if you don’t, as mud can be slippery too!) you might want to include some sand in your roadside emergency kit. This will help you get traction on snow and ice if you need to change a tire or you get stuck and are trying to get out.

Duct Tape

Duct tape is an essential item for any roadside emergency kit. This system is designed to increase your fuel efficiency without sacrificing the performance of the vehicle, and also allows for regenerative braking, which charges the battery when you brake.

In order to run properly, this system must have a steady flow of power. However, driving with the IMA light on increases your risk of damage to the vehicle. In order to do this, use an OBD2 code reader to check for any error codes in your vehicle. The port on most newer Honda Civic’s is above the pedals.

A hybrid car is a great automobile to have, and a Toyota Prius is one of the best. A popular reason for owning one of these vehicles is the low maintenance they require. That being said, some care needs to be taken, such as regularly checking your transmission fluid and changing it when necessary.

Did you know changing Prius transmission fluid is just as important as changing your oil? And many people forget about it.

The transmission fluid in your Prius is important for the well-being of your car. Replacing it at certain intervals is equally important. Today, you will learn how to check your transmission fluid, as well as when and how to change it.

Prius Transmission Fluid Check

Transmission fluid is important for all cars. One of the easiest ways to check the level is by going under the hood and manually checking it.

That being said, all Toyota Prius’ have a sealed transmission meaning there is no dipstick. While your transmission fluid should be somewhat maintenance-free, if you feel the need to check it, there will be a check valve under the transmission.

This valve will allow you to check the color of the fluid. Bright red-ish pink means it is in good condition. Dark red-ish brown means it is old and should be changed. The fill plug can also be checked. When there is a sufficient amount of fluid in your Prius, you will see it drip out of the fill plug.

It’s important to note that the vehicle needs to be completely level to check the fluids, so you may be better off taking it to a mechanic to check, as they can keep it level on a hydraulic lift.

When To Change Transmission Fluid

There is some debate about the Prius transmission fluid change interval. Toyota, for example, indicates that the transaxle (transmission) fluid in these models is a “lifetime” fluid. Unfortunately, that is false.

As a general rule of thumb, you should check the levels every 30K miles and change your Prius transmission fluid at intervals of 60k and 90k miles.

How To Tell Your Toyota Prius Transmission Fluid Needs to be Changed

There are a few ways to tell whether or not you need a fluid change. The first, as mentioned, is mileage.

The second indication is the “maintenance required” light on your dashboard. This light will illuminate when your transmission levels are low and when you need an oil change.

Keep in mind that the light comes on every 5,000 miles indicating an oil change is needed. You won’t always have a low transmission fluid level at this time.

Another indication is when your hybrid starts behaving oddly. Take a look at some physical signs:

Revving to high RPM at low speeds

Revving high when going uphill

High transmission temperature

Car won’t move at all

If you see physical signs of distress, some damage has usually occurred already.

How To Change Your Prius Transmission Fluid

Performing a Prius transmission fluid change is not as complicated as you might think, but it can be expensive. Professional mechanics can charge upwards of $300 for this task, however, if you’re not comfortable working on your own vehicle, a professional would be the best route to ensure nothing goes wrong.

Each Prius model is more or less the same when it comes to a transmission change.

If you’re choosing to do it yourself, to start, you will need to gather some basic supplies:

Ramps, jack, or lift

Torque wrench

Socket wrench

24mm socket head

10mm hex socket

Drain pan

1 or 5-gallon bucket

Funnel with extension hose

Toyota ATF WS transmission fluid (4 quarts)

2 gasket washers (crush washers)

Dropcloth or newspaper

Oil pan

Once you have all of your supplies, follow the easy steps below.

Lift The Car

First, you will need to use ramps, a jack, or a lift to raise your car off the ground. This allows you to work under the car easily.

You can use two ramps or a jack, but it is better to have the car level. Four ramps or a lift is preferable, but you can do it with a jack if need be.

Use a drop or newspapers to cover the ground to absorb any fluid spills.

Remove Plugs

Next, you need to remove the drain plug and the fill plug. When looking up the transmission case, the drain plug is in the center while the fill plug is directly above it going toward the front of the car.

Use your wrench and 24mm socket to remove the fill plug first. You may hear a hissing sound. This is normal.

Remove the drain plug next with the 10mm hex socket. Place your one or five-gallon bucket underneath the plug first, though. Open it slowly to avoid a gush of fluid going everywhere.

Drain the Fluid

Allow the fluid to drain out of the plug. This can take a few minutes as the stream slows to a trickle.

Pop the hood while waiting for the transmission fluid to empty. Remove the engine cover, too. This allows your funnel’s extension to reach the fill plug easier.

Change Crush Washers

While waiting for the old fluid to drain, clean both plugs and replace the crush washers.

The washers fill in gaps and keep any fluid from leaking out. Over time, however, they can weaken. Replacing them is important to keep your hybrid running smoothly.

Replace Drain Plug

Once the old fluid has been removed, replace the drain plug. Use your torque wrench along with the 10mm hex socket.

You will need to set your torque wrench to 29 ft-lb to ensure it is on properly.

Add Fluid

Thread your extension hose down through the hood of the car to the open fill plug. Make sure your funnel is securely attached, as well.

Look at the fluid that drained out. We like to use a measuring device to catch the old fluid. This way, you will know how much to put back in.

That being said, most Prius models take about four quarts. If you see the fluid rising to the top of the fill plug, you can stop. As mentioned above, a few drips over the side are okay, too.

Replace Fill Plug

Screw the fill plug back in using your torque wrench and 24mm socket head. Like the drain plug, you need to tighten it to 29 ft-lb.

Alternative Tools

Changing your transmission fluid in your Prius the old-school way is not a difficult process. That being said, there are some alternative tools you can use to make adding fluid easier.

A vacuum transfer pump replaces transmission fluid by placing the nozzle in the fill plug and pumping up the pressure.

An electric pump essentially does the same thing, though, you have to plug it in instead of pumping up the pressure. You also have to add quarts of fluid one at a time. You can add up to four in the vacuum pump.

The last option is a hand pump. Although this is an inexpensive way to go, we prefer the old-school way of using a funnel. When using a hand pump, you have to hold it steady, continually pump, and add fluid simultaneously.

Conclusion

A Prius transmission fuel change does not have to be done often, nor is it a difficult process. On the other hand, it is important for the overall performance and longevity of your vehicle.

Equally important to your Prius maintenance is ensuring the hybrid battery is in utmost working condition. If you find yourself in need of a hybrid battery replacement, you can find top-notch new and reconditioned batteries here that last longer and perform better!

The world’s first popularized hybrids started with the Toyota Prius in 1997, and you might have one just as old. Hybrid cars are built to last, but eventually, your vehicle, like any car, will need maintenance.

While that might sound scary, hybrid car maintenance costs do not have to be expensive. Most processes and costs for maintaining your hybrid vehicle will be no different than with a regular car.

By design, hybrid cars will save money over regular cars in some ways. For instance, since hybrid engines run less during low speeds, a hybrid model will not need oil changes nearly as frequently as a regular car.

However, hybrids will have some specific needs to keep in mind. Below, we will discuss some notable routine hybrid car maintenance needs and their prices compared to regular car repairs.

Transmission Fluid Changes and Flushes

While both standard and hybrid cars will need transmission fluid changes at higher mileages, hybrid cars often require continuously variable transmission (CVT) fluid.

When compared to automatic transmission fluids (ATF), the prices are very similar. When comparing both fluids from the same store, prices ranged between $6–$9 per quart, depending on the brand and manufacturer grades. You will need several quarts of fluid for a change, so the price will likely be around $45.

You can buy these fluids from auto parts stores and change them yourself to save some money, but many prefer to visit dealers, mechanics, or service centers. Service costs and tax could increase the cost up to $250, but whether your transmission fluid is ATF or CVT should not make much of a difference.

While your hybrid car may require a different transmission fluid than a regular car, the prices are remarkably similar and inexpensive.

Cooling System Maintenance

Hybrid cars come with a cooling system near the electric motor that keeps the motor components from overheating. These systems contain a heat exchanger, an electric pump, and a coolant reservoir. Depending on your make and model, your car may have one cooling system for the inverter and one for the engine.

While all cars regularly need antifreeze to run smoothly over time, hybrid cars often require specific kinds of coolant. Like with transmission fluid, a mechanic or service center can perform coolant exchange services, but it is usually cheaper to do the job yourself.

Let’s compare the coolant prices. The Toyota-prescribed Prius coolant is the Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (SLL), priced at $22 per gallon on average. For regular cars, coolant prices vary significantly from about $11 per gallon to $30 per gallon, depending on the car type and fluid quality.

Hybrid coolant has a chance of being more expensive than other coolants, and you may need twice as much if your car has two reservoirs. However, hybrid coolants like the Toyota SLL are made to last at least 50,000 miles, so you won’t have to make that investment often.

Hybrid Battery Replacements

While both conventional and hybrid vehicles contain 12V batteries, a hybrid vehicle has the addition of a special hybrid battery. Hybrid batteries are tough and long-lasting. If your hybrid battery is well taken care of, it will not need replacing for around 200,000 miles. Some states require manufacturers to include a hybrid battery warranty up to 150,000 miles, but other warranties only cover up to 100,000 miles.

However, the miles add up quickly, and you may eventually need a battery replacement. The costs for these procedures vary based on the extent of battery damage.

Dead or damaged cells are the primary cause of battery failure. The typical repair cost escalates depending on the number of damaged cells, ranging from about $500 at the cheapest to around $2,000 if most cells are dead. With this extent of damage, it may be cheaper to replace the battery in its entirety.

The typical price for a regular car battery replacement at a dealership is around $300 for labor but varies based on taxes and service costs.

While hybrid battery replacement costs are far greater than regular car battery replacement costs, hybrid batteries have much longer livelihoods, especially if well maintained. Taking care of your battery and using batteries with great cooling systems are ways to save money on hybrid car repairs effectively.

Hybrid Car Maintenance Tips

Taking care of your hybrid vehicle is the best way to prevent needing expensive repairs. Here are some tips to help ensure the longevity of your car and the safety of your investments:

Routinely change your transmission fluid and coolants. Neglecting these leads to faster battery deterioration. When changing these fluids, make sure that there are no leakages, which can also cause damage.

If you need new parts, don’t invest in anything without a warranty. Check to see if you are eligible for manufacturer warranties before buying new parts.

Consider upgrading your hybrid battery. A battery with a better cooling system and circulation configuration can help your hybrid model last much longer. In the long run, it means less money spent on repairs and battery reconditioning.

Exclusively Hybrid Batteries

Your battery is tantamount to your hybrid vehicle’s lifespan and performance.
What Does The Warning Mean?

Whenever this warning pops up, it usually means that the computer has detected a fault or an error within your car’s hybrid system. The warning often appears in two colors: Yellow and red.

The yellow light is often a sign of an error detected by your car’s computer system and is something to diagnose.

While both light colors warrant a quick diagnosis, the red light may be a sign of more severe issues within your car’s hybrid system that needs to be addressed immediately (Note that some vehicles, like the Toyota Camry only use yellow). If possible, you should avoid driving your vehicle before resolving the issue.

It is likely that whenever the “Check Hybrid System” warning pops up, you may experience a couple of other symptoms in your vehicle, such as:

Reduced engine performance (in terms of speed and acceleration).

Malfunction of the car’s hybrid system, which could cause the vehicle to run solely on gas

Increased fuel consumption.

What Causes the “Check Hybrid System” Warning?

The alert that you get on your dashboard may occur because of several issues. The hybrid warning systems are integrally more complex than typical vehicle warning systems, making it difficult to understand what is causing the warning to pop up.

Because of this, you should take your vehicle for a diagnosis to establish what is causing the alert.

Once you run the diagnostic tool, it is possible to determine that the warning is caused by one of the following:

Blown Fuse

Hybrid car batteries are usually connected to a fuse. Whenever there is a fault in the fuse or if the fuse fails, then the battery consequently stops working. The good news is that replacing a blown fuse is generally a simple task and can be quickly done by your local mechanic or even by yourself.

Inverter Failure

Inverters are responsible for converting Direct Current (DC) energy into Alternating Current (AC) energy in battery-driven systems. When the inverter is faulty, it could cause the hybrid system of your car not to function at its maximum capacity.

Inverter problems are, in most cases, as a result of overheating, usually a development of low inverter coolant or a malfunctioning cooling system. The hybrid system must be kept cool at all times for it to function effectively.

Battery Cell(s) failure

When the “Check Hybrid System” light pops up, and at the same time, you notice that your car’s battery charge state changes quickly from full to empty or vice versa, then it is possible that your battery pack contains a faulty cell in one of its modules.

Read more: How Long Do Hybrid Batteries Last?

The good news is that is where Exclusively Hybrid comes in. As dealers of both new and refurbished batteries for Toyota and Lexus hybrids, you will receive massive savings (up to 50%) when you purchase batteries from Exclusively Hybrid.

If saving you some money is not enough, you will be glad to know that the unique design of Exclusively Hybrid batteries includes a circulation configuration that allows the cells to stay cooler and prolongs the lifespan of your hybrid battery.

Related: Can You Drive a Hybrid Without the Battery?

12V Battery needs to replacing

There are times when your car’s 12-volt battery causes hybrid-related warnings. This usually necessitates the replacement, and it is often a simple task once you purchase a new battery. Some other signs that your battery needs to be changed are your car not starting or even problems with the electronic accessories in your vehicle (radio, lights).

Diagnostics for Hybrid System Warning

Depending on your experience with hybrid cars, you might be able to conduct a diagnosis of the problem yourself, or you can take it to the experts who, through advanced tools and code readers, can effectively troubleshoot and determine the problem.

Sometimes, the computer may have detected a tiny fault, especially when the yellow warning comes on. Turning the vehicle off for a few minutes then back on can reset the system and allow the computer to recheck. This method often solves the problem, especially if it is nothing serious.

However, if even after the reset, the warning light still displays or if the warning is red, then it would be advisable to have your vehicle scanned using a code reader.

Conclusion

It is possible that the “Check Hybrid System” warning might freak you out, especially if you have had past experience with hybrid parts dealerships or even if you have heard of others’ experiences. The main worry may come from not knowing the problem and fear that you may get ripped off by the repairers.

However, it is possible to have your car checked for error codes by a trusted mechanic within your area.
